In Hindu legend, Vishnu extended his left foot to measure the universe, and pierced a hole in its covering with his toe. The pure water of the Causal Ocean entered the universe, flowing through the abode of Brahma before descending to Earth. It flows through the hair of Shiva to become the Holy River Ganges, bringing life to the people.
